Make a difference
OAP's purpose is 'to come together as a community to improve
the quality of life for local older people'. For this reason, we are
particularly keen to recruit volunteers that live in the Burley, Headingley,
Kirkstall and Hyde Park areas of Leeds.
OAP's achievements would not be possible without the time,
energy, expertise and many other attributes given by local volunteers. The
people who volunteer for OAP come from a range of backgrounds, ages and
ethnicities. We are continually searching for volunteers who live locally, to
help with with anything from visiting an older person in their own home to
driving a minibus. We are particularly keen to recruit local retired people and
we have a good track record of enlisting the support of student residents.
We also work closely with both the student community action
bodies (ACTION and CALM) of the adjacent universities. We also have a good track
record of providing prompt references for those volunteers needing a
reference.
Last year 68 local people donated over 4000 hours of their
time. Below are some of the reasons volunteers gave:
-
"It is something different from University life." Manic Chandra.
-
" I like doing something that makes a difference."
Jess Clibbens.
-
"I am representing the people of OAP" Florence
Bonfield.
-
"It helps keep me young and keeps me out of trouble" Eileen
King.
-
"The children are really good listeners." Rosa Hawkins.
-
"I wanted to get to know my neighbours." Sarah Erskine.
Each volunteer needs to provide two references.
