As well as organising activities, Older Active People provides services
including a door-to-door assisted
supermarket
shopping scheme, a befriending scheme, an
oversize news sheet
and signposting and information.
Below are further details of these services.
Door-to-door supermarket
shopping - The Trolley Bus
The Trolley Bus is a door-to-door assisted
supermarket shopping service, for people who have problems accessing a
supermarket. The service runs each week, 52 weeks a year
to a local supermarket.
The Trolley Bus has its own part time driver, with
volunteers assisting with the shopping. The Trolley Bus is also an
opportunity to socialise over a cup of tea and a snack in the supermarket
cafe.
"There's no way I could get this shopping home from
town on my own."
Befriending
The
One to One scheme introduces local residents to their older
neighbours in an area where neighbours can change very quickly. Volunteers
usually visit once a week and we ask for a minimum commitment of a year. Each
volunteer visitor is interviewed, provides two references and is CRB
checked.
In 2007, the One-to-One scheme was awarded 'Approved
Provider Status' by the National Mentoring and Befriending Foundation.
"When you get to my age your mates have died off."
"Jess comes every week and is such good company".
"Its one of the most fulfilling hours of my week and
it is greatly appreciated by Olive."
News sheet
- The Goldie
The Goldie is OAP's oversize, award winning
(Communicators in Business Award),
quarterly news sheet. It is in its eighth year of distribution. It has a circulation of 1000.
Large print versions are also available. The Goldie is a valuable way of
keeping in contact with the membership of OAP.
In an evaluation of
the newsheet, respondents told us that it was:
"interesting",
"readable" and "very informative of things happening locally, I
look forward to every issue".

Signposting and information
OAP responds
to a broad range of enquiries for information including requests for help
with benefits, odd jobs, home security and advice. Referrers include:
other agencies, neighbours, and family but the majority of requests are
made by older people themselves. Last year we responded to over 150
telephone requests for information.
OAP's response is to provide the information being
requested or to assist in getting it from elsewhere. Evaluation of the
service unanimously found it "very easy" to contact. OAP
is developing its information service and we are currently a
'Gateway' site for Leeds LinkAge Plus. If you are looking for up-to-date
information relating to older peoples issues and what is happening in
Leeds, then you might want to visit the Info Store
website (www.olderpeopleleeds.info).
