As well as providing services, OAP organises
a range of activities including trips,
Intergenerational Activities,
monthly Bollywood screenings, and a
Caribbean Lunch Club. We also run a
Chair Based Exercise group, a
Wednesday lunch club , a theatre group
and
occasional holidays. Details of
each activity can be found below.
Trips - The
Friendly
Club
OAP
organises 18 trips a year. So far this year we have been to Spalding Country Flower
Show, the Lake District, Beverley Market and the Deep and more locally.... Nidd Hall,
Haworth, a mystery tour, the National Mining Museum, a cruise on the
River Ouse.
A list of forthcoming trips and outings is publicised
in the Goldie and we start taking bookings 4 weeks prior to the date of
the trip on a
first come first served basis. We try to provide volunteer support and
wheelchairs for those people that need them.
"We go to places we
might not get to by ourselves. They're great."
Intergenerational Activities - Generations Together
With the
support of its very own Intergenerational Development Worker, Generations
Together introduces local older people to local younger people, through
activities of mutual benefit. Activities so far have included visits by
local older people to local primary schools, making jam together, learning
dance together, baking and taking part in Intergenerational Circle Time
sessions! Volunteers are called Team GT, they are trained in Child
Protection and CRB checked. Funding for the
Intergenerational Development Worker is currently provided by the Balance
Foundation and Awards For All.
Barnardo's CANA Project
independently evaluated the project in 2003 and concluded that:
" I would recommend that anyone who is
interested in seeing the potential of working intergenerationally within
the community, spend time with Generations Together."
Bollywood Screenings
On
the last Thursday of each month, OAP screens a performance of a Bollywood
film at our local cinema, the Hyde Park Picture House. Films start at
11.30am and are usually shown with English subtitles. Volunteers
provide tea and there is a free raffle for the copy of the promotional
film poster. We try to show the most recent films distributed by Eros. For
up to date details of our latest screening please join our free mailing
list and / or see details on the back page of The Goldie.
"As well as enjoying a film I get to meet up
with friends from my old neighbourhood".
Wednesday Lunch
Club
Older Active People hold a
Luncheon Club every Wednesday at The Cardigan Centre. The cost of the
Lunch is £2.40, which is for a main course, pudding, tea/coffee
and biscuits.
We can collect people in our Mini
Bus on prior request. The cost of the transport is £1.00 each way.
The mini bus leaves The Cardigan Centre at 10.30 a.m. to begin the pick
ups, but as we have a lot of people to collect, the time of the
individual pick up is difficult to assess. Therefore, we ask people to
be ready for about 10.30 a.m. so as not to cause too much delay. Lunch
is served at about 12.15 p.m.
We currently have between 35 – 40
people attending the Lunches, and everyone is very friendly. New people
are always made welcome.
"Before I came here I was lonely, I look forward
to coming here on a Wednesday."
OAP has produced an information leaflet with details
of Lunch Clubs in the local area. Copies of which are
available from OAP.
The
Caribbean International Lunch Club
The Caribbean International Lunch Club meets each Thursday afternoon at
Kendal Carr sheltered housing complex. This group of mainly older
African-Caribbean people meet prepare and eat a traditional meal.
Transport is available for those people who live locally and require it.
"I very much enjoy the Caribbean food, the sociable atmosphere,
playing dominoes and cracking a joke now and then."
Chair Based
Exercise The falls reduction
exercise class meet each Tuesday morning (10.00 - 12.00) at Headingley
Parish Hall. The focus of the exercise class is to
have fun, improve flexibility, balance and strength, all of which help
prevent a fall.
"I look forward to the classes
and I know they are good for me.
When I go home I can feel that I have used all my muscles."
After the exercise group there is a discussion group,
where wide ranging and diverse subjects are are discussed in a
friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Theatre Group
This vibrant group attend productions in nearby
locations such as Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and Manchester.
Members of the group vote for which productions they want to go and see
and are contacted through OAP's theatre group mailing list. The group
also meets on the last Friday of the month to plan future activities.
Holidays
OAP provides people with details
of group holidays, such as those organised by Windmill Transport.
Although OAP's staff do not go along on the holidays, OAP members attend
and local pick up points can sometimes be organised. Through links with
the National Benevolent Fund for the Aged, we occasionally
organise free holidays for people who have not been on a holiday for
some time. |
